the main reference for the first part of comic research

to study comics, there are some important names that you should know. in our local context is obviously Prof Muliyadi mahamood. Karna Mustakim, my senior had done comic studies on phenomenology of comics in malaysia. hes from Indonesia and I can say he is really passionate about comics. Go karna!

other names to acknowledge are John A lent, Scott Mccloud, Fredrick Schodt, Will Eisner, and etc. Feel free to add more names!

  2. You can start with definitions (for e.g., the definition of manga etc.) for your lit rev., then you can start with the history of the development of comics? hehehe just a thought.

  4. I've met Dr.Lent when he was in Malaysia, he's quite knowledgeable in comics history. When I talked to him about the early days of manga influence coming to Malaysia, he was quite interested. You should share the findings of your research with him.

  6. Exactly, that's why he's interested in some of the more modern history of Malaysian comics, especially the era when Gempak first came around and slowly transitioned into a more manga-centric magazine. It's important to note the early internet era was important in bringing in new ideas to the field as well, which was how local mangakas such as Aimo first made names for themselves.

  7. Thank you so much for the input dangerism. There are actually not many literature review on more current n modern context discussing on comic art in malaysia. Some view manga as a sensitive subject to be discus on, eventho the influence of it is very much apparent. Thats what im trying to do, to document on the more recent issues in ourlocal comic industry. Btw, other than aimo and gempak artists, do u have any other artists suggestions which have manga influence in their career? Preferably artists who has much experience in the comic scene?
